Southington is approaching a threshold of maximum build-out, the community faces increasing limitations on future growth and maintaining economic vitality in the face of environmental concerns, infrastructure capacity and the ability to provide services and maintain a high quality of life. Issues included increasing traffic volumes, loss of farmland and the spread of residential development into more sensitive natural areas. Strategic planning activities included public forums, workshops, questionnaires and stakeholder interviews. The plan focused on limited undeveloped land, revitalization of existing commercial/industrial land, and the need to optimize natural and man-made resources.
